The Cookie Project: One Man‘s Woman‘s Transformation
An unflinching documentary which completely shatters gender borders, Cookie Project follows it’s subject from straight family man through hormone therapy and sex-change surgery to a happy lesbian woman. Charismatic, lively lesbian Cookie used to be known as Derwin Fields, a married-with-children ex-Marine and LA police officer. Throughout the course of the film, Cookie and other experts on transgender issues discuss the importance of surgery and gender identity, and we follow Cookie to Thailand where she goes under the knife for her sexual reassignment surgery in a shocking 20 minute sequence (cut from the 2 hours plus operation). It’s an extremely graphic segment of the film, immediately followed by Cookie’s ecstatic testimony, the thoughts of her lover, Madeline, and the results of her procedure. Affirming and
groundbreaking in it’s frankness, it’s absolutely compelling.
