Brother to Brother
An impressive and important work of film art, Brother to Brother is the story of Perry (Anthony Mackie), a gay African-American artist and student who relives the Harlem Renaissance days through the eyes of his friend Bruce Nugent, an elderly former poet and painter. Nugent regales Perry with vivid stories of the Renaissance, and his collaborations with an artistic circle that included the likes of Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and Wallace Thurman. Perry, graced with a powerful role model, is emboldened to confront his own present-day demons and claim his unique place in this world.
Moving, insightful, and rich in historic detail, this film is a compelling portrait of hard-won personal dignity, and of life lived in the long shadow of history—with both its ponderous weight, and its occasional liberations, and you’ll surely leave the theatre smiling.
